Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based, person-centered approach that involves a particular way of understanding our role and how we can engage with clients in meaningful ways about change and growth. Using On Second Thought: How Ambivalence Shapes Your Life by Miller (2022), the concept of ambivalence, how it is an important part of decision making, and engaging with ambivalence to promote change from an MI perspective will be presented. There will be opportunities to ask questions, practice skills, engage in self-reflection and discussion.

To participate in these sessions, experience in Motivational Interviewing is needed from previous participation in an introductory course, or other equivalent experience. Please note that participants are expected to be on camera during sessions, and be able to actively engage in discussion, breakout rooms, and skills practice. Please plan accordingly, so that you can be an active participant.

After this session, participants will be able to:

  • Explore how ambivalence impacts decision-making and behaviour
  • Discuss how opposing arguments present in ambivalence can lead to growth and increased self-awareness
  • Analyze different types of ambivalence and examples of how they can create opportunities for change
  • Practice MI communication skills to explore ambivalence and move towards change
