Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based, person-centered approach that involves a particular way of understanding our role and how we can engage with clients in meaningful ways about change and growth. An important part of our work involves sharing information and giving advice that may help improve our client’s health and wellbeing. However, giving advice can evoke a defensive response from our clients that can decrease the likelihood of behaviour change. Using an MI-consistent approach to sharing information, is more collaborative, client-centered and accounts for a client’s perspective, strengths and experience.
Using the newest edition of Motivational Interviewing: Helping People Change and Grow (4th ed., 2023) by Miller & Rollnick, key concepts, skills, and other relevant information will be presented. There will be opportunities to ask questions, practice skills, engage in self-reflection and discussions.
To participate in these sessions, experience in Motivational Interviewing is needed from previous participation in an introductory course, or other equivalent experience. Please note that participants are expected to be on camera during sessions, and be able to actively engage in discussion, breakout rooms, and skills practice. Please plan accordingly, so that you can be an active participant.
After this session, participants will be able to:
- Identify at least 3 skills to provide information to clients that is MI-consistent
- Discuss the importance of seeking permission from clients before giving information
- Describe techniques to evoke information from the client to tailor advice
- Practice collaborative skill to share information (Ask-Offer-Ask)
